Present weather corresponds to all forms of precipitation such as rain, snow grains, snow flakes, ice pellets, drizzle, etc. In order to determine the present weather at DDU, two disdrometers will be installed during the field campaign, a PWS100 and a VPF-730, manufactured by Campbell Scientific and Biral respectively. Both sensors are laser based in the range of the near infrared spectrum (830 and 880 nm resp.) and are complemented by external temperature sensors. One of the main differences between both sensors is the sampling method, PWS100 collects date from a surface of 40 cm2 and VPF-730 has a volumetric sampling of 400 cm3. Both PWS100 and VPF-730 provides the Drop Size Distribution (DSD) statistics, size velocity maps, precipitation rate and visibility range.
